Alex Jones, Sydney-born, completed degrees in both Arts and Law at the University of Sydney.

Jones initially joined the English department in 1966 as a teaching fellow. Two years later he was appointed as lecturer and in 1970 promoted to senior lecturer. He retired in 2003, and became an honorary research associate in 2004.

Jones, who was elected to succeed H.L. Rogers, was the first dean of the faculty who was not a professor.
