New South Wales-born, John Gunn obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Arts at Sydney University; his doctorate was also completed there, after retiring.

After lecturing at the Bathurst Teachers’ College, Gunn began teaching in the English department at Sydney as a lecturer in 1961, and became senior lecturer in 1965. He was promoted in 1970 to associate professor, Early English Literature and Language, and retired in 1988. As dean of the faculty, he was elected to succeed I. Jack.
