Sydney-born, Stephen Garton graduated in Arts from Sydney University and went on to complete his doctorate at the University of New South Wales.

Garton began teaching at Sydney University in 1987 as a lecturer in the History department, and was promoted to senior lecturer in 1991 and associate professor in 1994. He was given a personal chair in History in 2000, and appointed to the Challis chair in History in 2004.

As dean of the faculty, Garton was appointed to succeed B. Cass. He was re-appointed at the end of his first term and remained dean until 2009, when he was appointed provost and deputy vice-chancellor of Sydney University.
