Arabic and Islamic Studies program overview

The Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies offers two majors in its undergraduate studies program. Depending on your year of enrolment the requirements for completing the major may be different. Select from the options below to see the requirements relevant to you.

I started my degree before 2014

A major in Arabic and Islamic Studies will require a minimum of 36 credit points at senior level. It combines ARBC and ARIS units and allows more focus on either area of study as follows:

Either Arabic Language and Literature (ARBC): 24 credit points of Arabic language senior units (ARBC2613-3616 B stream or ARBC2633-3638 A stream), plus 12 credit points from the ARIS senior units (ARIS2673-3676).

Or Arab World, Islam and the Middle East (ARIS): 24 credit points of ARIS units (ARIS2673-3676), plus 12 credit points of senior Arabic language units (ARBC2613-3616 B stream or ARBC2633-3638 A stream).

I started my degree in or after 2014

The department of Arabic and Islamic Studies currently offers two majors; Arab World, Islam and the Middle East (the ARIS Major) and Arabic Language and Literature (the ARBC Major). The units of study for the majors can be found in the Table A unit of study table for Arabic and Islamic Studies. The table shows units of study on offer in the current handbook year. You may find information regarding a full list of units of study available to the major on the departmental website.

Arab World, Islam and the Middle East (the ARIS Major)
A major in Arab World, Islam and the Middle East requires at least 36 senior credit points, including at least 24 from culture units of study (ARIS) and 12 from language units of study (ARBC). At least 12 credit points of these must be taken at 3000 level.

Arabic Language and Literature (the ARBC Major)
A major in Arabic Language and Literature requires at least senior 36 credit points including at least 24 from Language units of study and 12 from culture units of study and at least 12 credit points at 3000 level.
