Athens Summer School 2013
January 5-27, 2013
The Department of Archaeology and the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens invite your application to join the third Classical Archaeology Summer School in Athens.
The Summer School is a unique opportunity to study the archaeology and history of ancient Athens at first hand. With a particular focus on the Archaic and Classical periods (ca. 630-323 B.C.) and under expert tuition, you will enjoy formal lectures integrated with daily visits to archaeological sites and museums in Athens and Attica. You will also travel further afield to the panhellenic sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi.
The course is open to students of Australian universities and to Australian high school teachers. Interested members of the general public are also welcome to apply.
Summer School tutors:
- Dr Lesley Beaumont, Senior Lecturer in Classical Archaeology at the University of Sydney
(formerly Assistant Director of the British School at Athens) - Dr Stavros Paspalas, Deputy Director of the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens.
Essential Information
Costs
You will be required to remit two separate sums to the University of Sydney for participation in the Athens Summer School.
The first amount of $3250 (based on a minimum enrolment of 15 and current currency exchange rates) represents the in-country costs of your stay in Greece. This includes:
- Twin-share self catering accommodation at Australian Archaeological
- Institute hostel in Athens or at other foreign archaeological institute hostels
- Overnight accommodation in Delphi
- Site and museum entrance fees
- In-country transport to sites and museums in itinerary
- Membership of the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens
- Library use in Athens
- Six picnic lunches and two taverna dinners
The cost does not include your return airfare to Greece, which you should organise independently.
A deposit of $500 will be required to reserve your place in the Summer School, and the balance of payment will be due 60 days prior to departure.
The second sum payable to the University of Sydney will be your Summer School tuition fee. Although the 2013 levy is not yet known, the 2012 indicative fee is $3310 for undergraduates and $3000 for postgraduates. FEE-HELP is available to enrolled Australian undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Credit points
University of Sydney students can earn 6 senior credit points by undertaking this Summer School in lieu of ARCA2613 (undergraduates) and ARCL 6902 (postgraduates). All students enrolling in the Summer School for credit will be required to complete specified assignments both in Athens and on return to Australia.
Non University of Sydney students should discuss accreditation with their home institutions.
Bursaries
A number of bursaries to offset the cost of participation in the Summer School will be available to successful applicants who would not otherwise be able to participate. If you wish to apply for a bursary, please enclose a letter to Dr Beaumont explaining your reasons for applying. Please note, you may also be eligible to apply for scholarships such as Marion Macaulay Bequest Scholarship for overseas studies in Arts and Education.
