Near Eastern, Central and East Asian Archaeology

The regions covered by this program include many of the world’s great early civilisations including Mesopotamia, Persia, Central Asia and China. These arose from individual prehistoric roots but as they grew, rapidly became intermeshed in complex webs of material and cultural exchange. A range of projects examine multi-faceted aspects of growth and development across this vast sweep of the Asian continent. Current studies cover transmission of key innovations from Eurasia to China in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, the development of statehood in a Central Asian oasis, understanding devolved power and propaganda in the aftermath of the first Persian Empire, and the rise of nomadic pastoralism in the Near East.
