Farewell Dr Thomas Berghuis

16 July, 2013

This month, Dr Thomas Berghuis leaves the Department for an exciting new position as the Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation curator of Chinese art at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. His combination of scholarly and curatorial expertise clearly appealed to the Museum.

Thomas was first a student of Professor John Clark’s, before taking up a three-year post in the Department when John was awarded his ARC Research Professorship. In this role, Thomas taught across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, continuing the proud tradition of Power’s and the Department’s engagement with Asian Art.

Thomas is well known for his publication Performance Art in China (Timezone, 2007) and for his involvement in important curatorial initiatives such as Edge of Elsewhere. As Thomas is a valuable collaborator in several important research projects here (our Getty initiative and a current ARC proposal), we’ll most certainly be keeping in contact with him as a vital contributor to these future initiatives.

Thomas will no doubt be updating us on his work and projects in the US regularly, and joins a growing number of alumni now in important curatorial posts worldwide. We will miss Thomas greatly, and wish him all the best on his exciting new appointment.
