Satellite Television - Language Channels
Arts Digital provides the university community with streamed television broadcasts in several languages. These broadcasts are not archived, they are available in real time from our satellite feeds. From the links below you can access the broadcaster's website for program information or link to the streamed broadcasts.
Please note that these broadcasts are only available to computers on the main campus of the University.
Friendly warning - our streamed broadcasts are free to watch but some of the broadcaster's web sites have other streaming media links that use Windows Media, Real Media or Quicktime streaming technologies. Watching these streaming sources will incur large external internet traffic charges to your workstation.
Some of the current channels available: (subject to change without notice due to satellite availability)
Q. How do I watch these channels?
A. The computers in the Language labs in the Brennan MacCallum building, including the Self Study room 222, have the necessary software installed and setup. Simply start the VLC program and you should see the program listing under Usyd META.
Technical instructions can be found here.
Due to the bandwidth these video streams consume they do not leave the main campus fibre optic network. They are not available over modems or any remote campus that is connected via Microwave or landlines. A typical modem has 1/30th of the required capacity, and most microwave links are 2Mb. The Videos are 1.5Mb each.
Note: The Conservatorium of Music and the Law School in Phillip St are now connected via high speed fibre optical cables to Campus. Network wise they are now part of the main campus.
