Arts Digital: Self Study

The Self-Study room houses resources taught within the University, from beginner to advanced level. It provides access to interactive self-paced language learning materials, some recorded lectures and class work for students and staff learning languages other than English and English as a second language.

Computers provide access to interactive multimedia language resources and live multilingual satellite television broadcasts. Language reference materials such as encyclopaedias, dictionaries and some textbooks are also available for use here.

Capacity is 44 seats.

The room supports:

  • 4 analog language consoles
  • 33 student computer positions - 2 Apple eMac G4 700MHz & 31 HP Compaq DC7100SFF Desktops
  • DVD playback is from all computers and 1 TV
  • VHS and Betamax playback is from 2 TVs

Students may use this room whenever the Arts Digital Resource Centre is open and space permits.

Satellite TV

Live satellite broadcasts are available from all computers in various languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, English, German, Indonesian and Spanish) and can be watched on the computers. For instructions on how to view satellite broadcasts, please click here.

Foreign language films & News programs

Foreing language films

Want to brush up on your language skills, and have a bit of relaxation / enjoyment at the same time? Then why not watch a foreign language movie or even listen to the news?
On all computers in the Self-Study room, you will find a large collection of foreign language films and documentaries, many of them with subtitles. These can be accessed from a folder called Course Materials and Foreign Languages.

Interactive CDs / DVDs

There are a couple of language learning programs available on the computers. These include EuroTalk’s popular Talk Now! and World Talk interactive software. For more information on these programs, click here. As well as audio materials, the Self-Study room also houses reference books, some course materials, as well as a collection for ESL (English as a Second Language) learners.

* Note that foreign language dictionaries, CDs and DVDs are held in the AV Language Library. Please also note that the resources are not for loan, but are available for use in the Self-Study room.
