Department of Chinese Studies
Chinese is the language of the future. With its dynamic economy and changing society, China plays an ever-increasing role on the international stage, and studying this important and fascinating country will repay the effort. The Department of Chinese Studies is geared towards providing students at all language levels with a comprehensive training in the Chinese language and opportunities to study topics as diverse as language, linguistics, translation, literature, gender and film. Studying with us will give you not only strong Chinese language skills, but a broad comprehension and insight into China that can help you in careers in international relations, multinational corporations, media, tourism, NGOs and education. You can also take advantage of the University's exchange agreements and study at some of the best Chinese universities, including Peking University, where the Department runs an Intensive Summer that attracts over 100 students every year.
Stephen Johnson takes a closer look at the poetry used by Mahler in Das Lied von der Erde. He interviews Professor Yixu Lu, Head of School, School of Languages and Cultures. Professor Lu explains why the ideas expressed expressed by Mahler were relevant to the German speaking world around the turn of the twentieth century.
