Department of Classics and Ancient History
Welcome to the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Sydney. Classics and Ancient History has been taught at Sydney since the University's inception in 1852. The department is located in the historic main quadrangle and the adjunct Brennan/MacCallum buildings (map). We are the largest department of Classics and Ancient History in Australasia with an internationally renowned faculty.
The Department is administered by the School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry (SOPHI), within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. If you have already enrolled in an undergraduate degree, or are about to start one, we invite you to explore our offerings. We also offer several postgraduate research programmes and have a large and vibrant postgraduate community.

At first glance, the realm of scientific polling, forecasting, and modeling of future scenarios seems worlds away from that of inspired divination as it prevailed in ancient Greece and Rome. The former draws on calculations of probability and likelihood, while the latter claims to disclose a predetermined divine fate.
