Extension of candidature
Full-time doctoral (PhD, DArts, DSocSci) candidates are afforded 8 semesters, and part-time doctoral candidates 16 semesters, to complete the requirements of the degree and submit their thesis for examination.
Full-time master degree (MA-Research, MPhil) candidates are afforded 4 semesters, and part-time master degree candidates 8 semesters, to complete the requirements of the degree and submit their thesis for examination.
Candidates enrolled in their last semester may apply for an extension of candidature of one semester. Candidates must have completed a Higher Degree Annual Progress Review and Report for their final year of candidature to be eligible to apply for an extension.
An extension cannot be applied for after the following relevant semester’s HECS census deadline (i.e. 31 August for Semester 1 completions and 31 March the following year for Semester 2 completions). Candidates are strongly encouraged to submit their application a minimum of one week prior to the relevant semester’s HECS census deadline to allow sufficient time for the application to be considered by the Faculty’s Associate Dean of Postgraduate Research and processed accordingly. Earlier notification is preferred.
Candidates must include reasons for their application, any supporting documentation they may have (e.g. Doctor’s certificate, evidence of hardship, employment or family responsibilities, etc.), and a detailed timeline for thesis completion and submission for examination within one further semester of enrolment. Candidates must then obtain the signed approval of their supervisor and their department’s Postgraduate Research Coordinator prior to submitting their application to the Faculty. Where the candidate’s supervisor is also the department’s Postgraduate Research Coordinator, the form must be approved and signed by the Chair of Department or Head of School. Applications may be submitted in person to the Faculty’s student services counter during standard opening hours. Alternatively, applications may be submitted as a scanned email attachment sent from the candidate’s University of Sydney email address.
Candidates will be notified of the result of their application by email.
