Postgraduate Research candidates nearing the end of their candidature will need to prepare their thesis to submit for examination.
A total of four duplicate thesis copies must be submitted for doctoral theses (PhD, DArts, DSocSci), and a total of three copies for Masters theses (MPhil, MA by Research).
Please note: Theses must be submitted in perfect (i.e. thermal) binding. Springback, ringback, or spiral binding is not acceptable. The Copy Centre, which is part of the University Printing Service, can give advice and quotes on printing a thesis.
Candidates should consult their supervision team and their department’s Postgraduate Research Coordinator for advice on referencing style, formatting, and presentation.
The Faculty requests that candidates give three months’ notice of the expected date of submission of their thesis by lodging a Notice of Thesis Submission form with the Faculty office.
Further information on thesis submission requirements and procedures can be found on the Notice of Thesis Submission form.
Deferring the public availability of a thesis
Candidates undertaking postgraduate research award courses at the University of Sydney are required to lodge a copy of the thesis in the University library, however the University recognises that there are certain circumstances where deferment of the public availability of the thesis is appropriate.
If a candidate believes their interests are at risk by making the thesis available, then they may apply for deferment of availability of the thesis for a specified period of time. For further details, and for an application to defer the public availability of a thesis, please go to the forms link in the top right hand corner of this page.
