Undergraduate study
Sometimes the subject matter taught in a unit of study may span 2 or more subject areas (eg the senior unit of study ASNS3619 China and Globalisation counts towards an Asian Studies Major and also a History major). In these cases a unit may be cross-listed to one or more majors. The ‘cross-listing’ of a subject is a formal agreement between the departments involved, you can not apply to have a unit cross-listed to your major individually. If you choose to crosslist a unit to your major, it cannot then be counted towards another major. The general rule on cross-listing is that a maximum of 18 senior credit points can be cross-listed to a major, but this can vary depending on the department and the major being offered.
Steps to follow
Students should consult the rules for completion of their chosen major, as set out in the Table of Units of Study.
Students can the use the Search Tool below to search for any available crosslisted units. Searching can be done in two ways, either by viewing a major and seeing what units can count towards it or by Unit of study, seeing what majors it can count towards.
In some instances the prerequisites placed on a unit of study may be waived if a student is intending to crosslist the unit to another major. Students must contact Student Services to enable their enrolment if they have not completed the prerequisites for a unit of study.
The rules
- Students normally have the option of cross-listing up to 18 senior credit points (that is 3 units of study) towards their major. However the rules may vary and students should consult the rules for completion of a major before making their choice.
- Units of study cannot be counted towards more than one major.
- Only those units of study which already appear in the tables as cross-listed units will be permitted for cross-listing.
- All normal enrolment deadlines apply.
Postgraduate study
Applying to crosslist a unit of study means to count that unit towards your degree, even though it isn’t listed under the core or elective units available. The ability to cross-list units of study in your degree will be stating in the resolutions of the degree you are studying. No crosslisting is available to Graduate Certificate students.
Please refer to the Postgraduate handbook to view the resolutions of your award course and check whether you are able to crosslist units to your degree. These units must fit within the core requirements for your degree.
Steps to follow
You will need to complete the Crosslist a unit of study form and have it approved by the relevant postgraduate coursework coordinator or degree director.
