Postgraduate Research Orientation
Welcome to your time as a postgraduate research student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
You are joining over 600 other postgraduate research students in the Faculty, who are working towards one of five degreesthe Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Arts, Doctor of Social Sciences, Master of Philosophy and Master of Arts by Research. Some of you will be studying full-time with us, while others will be studying part-time. Some of you will have completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Sydney; others will have come from a wide range of other Australian or international universities.
This diversity is one of the strengths of the Faculty’s postgraduate research programs, but it can also cause confusion. You will meet other postgraduate research students who will be working in quite different ways towards their degrees. That is why we have provided the orientation materials on this site, which will answer some of the questions you are sure to have about your postgraduate research program.
We also run orientation sessions for postgraduate research students at the start of each semester, a major one in March and a shorter one in August. (Students who enrol in Semester 2 are welcome to attend the March orientation, whether or not they have attended the August orientation.) To register for the next orientation, please do so below.
We may not be able to answer all your questions through the materials below, or at your orientation, however your supervisors, other academics and administrative staff in the Faculty are also on hand to help you. Please do not hesitate to get in touch whenever you have questions or concerns about your program.
Best wishes for your research studies at the University of Sydney. We hope you enjoy your time with us.
Associate Dean for Postgraduate Research
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
Please make use of the podcasts and other materials below from the March 2013 Orientation for newly commencing postgraduate research students in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. These resources should aid in preparing you for your studies. If you have any further questions after reviewing these resources, please feel free to ask us at your Orientation and Welcome on the 2 of August, 2013. To register to attend the Orientation and Welcome and for further information, please see below.
Please also note that not all sessions that were presented in the March 2013 Orientation and Welcome can be listed in the below table. This is due to those sessions being run as small group sessions or as tours.
There are currently two “hot desk” PGARC spaces which new HDR students can apply to use. These are in the Old Teachers’ College (as mentioned in the podcast) and a new temporary PGARC space in the Victoria Park Room (540A) in Fisher Library. It has 30 desks with computers, free printing facilities, lockers and access to a kitchen and breakout space. Opening hours are restricted to the Fisher Library opening hours and you will need to swipe into the space after 5pm. Fisher VPR is a clear desk facility: you must remove all items from the desk you have used at the end of each day.
In addition, given the method of session delivery, not all sessions from the Semester One, 2013 Orientation and Welcome could be listed in the above table. You will have the opportunity to ask further questions on anything not covered above at the Orientation and Welcome event for Semester Two, 2013. Further details can be found below.
