Bachelor of Arts (Languages)

4 years full-time (Pass or Honours)

The Bachelor of Arts (Languages) degree is structured to attract students interested in pursuing their chosen linguistic specialisations through the combination of language and other subject areas.

The additional year beyond that required for the three-year Bachelor of Arts degree is not designed for those who simply wish to do more language study. The in-country component will enable you to spend at least one semester or approved study overseas in a country in which your language major is spoken and to credit those studies to your degree.

The experience of in-country study will improve your linguistic fluency substantially and rapidly and will also enable the continuation of your studies in other humanities/social science subjects at the overseas university. A contribution of $5000 towards one semester of study overseas will be provided.

Semester / Year Abroad Component

Usually during your third year, some of your credit points have to be earned in a country in which your language major is spoken. So, your semester or year abroad must be undertaken at an appropriate university in Europe, the Middle East, or Asia.

  • If you go overseas for a semester, 24 credit points have to be earned, a certain number of which must be towards your language major.
  • If you go overseas for one year, then 48 credit points must be earned, a certain number of which must be towards your language major. Check with the Degree Director first, to make sure that you fulful this requirement correctly.
