Upgrade or Exit with a Shorter Award Course

Please note: this information is for students who wish to upgrade or exit within an embedded sequence. Students wishing to transfer to a different award course (ie from Master of Museum Studies to the Master of Art Curatorship) will need to make a new application for admission.

In a few select degrees, students apply directly to the Faculty.

Introduction

Students can apply to either upgrade, or exit their studies with a shorter award course, provided it is within an embedded sequence and the admission requirements for each stage have been met.

Upgrades for postgraduate award courses

Students can apply to upgrade from a Graduate Certificate to a Graduate Diploma or Masters, or can apply to upgrade from a Graduate Diploma to a Masters, provided that the upgrade is within the embedded sequence and all requirements for the award course have been met. An average of 65% will need to be maintained across all units of study. For example, an upgrade from a Graduate Certificate in Cultural Studies to a Graduate Diploma or Masters of Cultural Studies falls within the embedded sequence.

Only the highest award completed will be conferred, so you must apply to upgrade before the appropriate deadline, and you cannot apply to upgrade if the shorter award course has already been conferred.

Applications for upgrades will not be considered if requirements for the shorter award course have not been met.

Discontinue study and exit with a shorter degree

It is possible to exit a Graduate Diploma or Masters early, with a shorter award course, provided it is within the embedded sequence. Requirements for the shorter award course must have been completed. Information on the requirements for the shorter award course, including core units of study that must be completed, can be found in the Tables of units of study found in the postgraduate handbook.

Faculty guidelines

Students should consult the Faculty guidelines before making an application to upgrade their postgraduate award course, or exit with the shorter degree. These guidelines can be found in the 'Forms and documents' section in the top right-hand corner of this page.

Steps to apply

  • Students should read the Faculty guidelines before making an application to upgrade or exit.
  • Students need to complete and submit their application by the appropriate deadline.
  • The student will be notified, by email, of the outcome of their application. As upgrades can only be done within an embedded sequence, there is no need to submit an internal credit application with an application to upgrade.
