| The Department of Arabic and Islamic
Studies focuses on the Arab world, Islam
and the Middle East, including its history,
religion, society, thought, culture and
politics, as well as Arabic language and
media. The department’s research strengths include Islamic political thought, Islamic- Christian relations, Islam in the modern world, fundamentalism, women’s issues, Arab political culture, Arabic literature, and Arab and Muslim Australian community and youth issues. The Chair of Department, Senior Lecturer Dr Nijmeh Hajjar’s research interests and publications cover: Arabic as a living language, modern Arabic literary criticism, Arab political and social thought, the city in modern Arabic literature & film, the language of modern Arabic political discourse, women, gender issues and patriarchy in Arab societies, traditions of Islamic religious poetry. She has worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at this university, and a lecturer & researcher at the ANU. She is a Member of the Academic Council, Ameen Rihani Institute, Washington DC. Honorary Associate Professor Ahmad Shboul’s research interests and publications cover: socio-cultural and intellectual history of the Middle East, Arabic and Islamic thought and culture, Islam in the contemporary Arab world, Arab and Muslim communities in Australia and Arab-Australian cultural relations, Arab Islamic historiography and human geography, and Islamic-Western cultural relations.
