Chinese Studies has a long and multifaceted history with rich traditions of philosophy, literature, art and religion. With its dynamic economy and changing society, China is also playing an increasingly important role in international affairs. Chinese Studies offers postgraduate research students the opportunity to examine China's history, society, culture, language and politics. Academic staff specialise in a number of broad interdisciplinary areas including: the political and social organization of modern China, modern and contemporary Chinese literature and film (particularly tensions between regionalism and cosmopolitanism); Ming and Qing history; Chinese environmental and gender history; the language and literature of the formative pre-Han period (5-1c BCE); and, the structure and history of Chinese language.
