Postgraduate Research 2012 Overview

Japanese has been taught at the University of Sydney since 1917, making it one of the oldest programs of its kind in the Englishspeaking world.

The department's staff includes 10 full-time academics who specialise in the fields of Japanese history (modern and premodern), language, contemporary Japanese politics and society, and Japanese poetry, drama and stories. Visit the academic staff page on the departmental website.

The University's East Asian collection includes over 120,000 titles consisting of primary and secondary sources from China, Japan and Korea. The library also boasts a rich collection of books on Japanese art and art history.

Research students may apply for the Inoue Yasushi Award for Outstanding Research in Japanese Literature in Australia. The award is given annually for five years, beginning in 2007, for the best refereed journal article or book chapter published in English during the previous year by a researcher based in Australia. The recipient will receive $1000 as well as a certificate of the award's conferral.

Departmental funds are available to support research students’ travel expenses for research gathering and conference participation.
