This interdisciplinary programme of study is administered by The Medieval and Early Modern Centre. The Centre brings together a significant array of academic talent from a range of disciplines working on medieval-related subjects. Currently it has 44 members or ex-members of the academic staff of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences who are full Members of the Centre and contribute to its teaching and research programmes. The Centre draws on the resources of the Fisher Library, which offers one of the strongest collections in the field in the southern hemisphere.

Academic staff have expertise in a broad range of areas, including : medieval history and archaeology; religion and myth; music, art, and sculpture; languages and literatures. Discipline areas include : Arabic, Art History, Byzantine Studies, English, French, History, Islamic Studies, Italian, Jewish Studies, Medieval Latin, Music, and Religious Studies.

Academic staff have been remarkably successful in obtaining research grants. Over 16 members of the Centre have held research grants of one kind or another, some more than once, in the period 1997-2007. They have also published prolifically, producing over 50 books in the same period. The Centre also has its own publications series, Making the Middle Ages, which to date has published eight volumes. It has now commenced a new series to be entitled Medieval Voyaging. In 2010 one student completed an M.Phil. and another a Ph.D.  In 2012 one M.Phil. student and one Ph.D. student will commence work on, respectively, the Third Crusade and Chrestien de Troyes.
