The Australia-Korea Foundation (AKF) offers annual grant funding to organisations and individuals to support projects and activities to advance Australia's engagement with Korea, including exchanges, partnerships and other collaborations in the general fields of business, education, academia, arts/culture and society.

Through an AKF Grant, Associate Professor David Kim at the School of Economics has developed a program to increase understanding and awareness of the Australia-Korea bilateral economic relationship among a large number of Australian and Korean students.

To achieve this, Associate Professor Andrew Wait presented an invited seminar on "Trust and the Delegation of Real Authority” at Yonsei University on 26 April 2017. In turn, the University of Sydney was honoured to host Professor Doo Won Lee from Yonsei University to present a  guest lecture to the students in the undergraduate unit ECOS2025 East Asian Economies at the University of Sydney on 5 May 2017.

Professor Lee’s lecture introduced initial conditions of the Korean economy at the time of independence from Japan in 1945. Upon describing unfavourable initial conditions, he summarised three major achievements of the Korean economic development after the Korean War (1950-1953).

Professor Lee also explained the determinant factors of the Korean economic success, and then introduced the institutional approach, which emphasises the role of the government. His lecture also outlined the strengths and weaknesses of the Korean economy.
