Department of English
The Department of English offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses across a wide range of genres, authors and historical periods in English literature and language, as well as Irish, American and Australian literatures, literary theory, film studies and creative writing. It is one of the largest Departments of English in Australia and is enriched by the research strength of our internationally distinguished staff.
The study of English opens up extraordinary and inspiring worlds of literary art and ideas. It equips students with valuable and transferrable skills in close-reading, critical and imaginative analysis, communication and argumentation.
The department teaches an undergraduate major in English and a major in Australian Literature. Both English and Australian Literature offer an Honours year. Students may give added shape to their studies by selecting units that form coherent ‘pathways’ though specific areas of interest.
At postgraduate level there is a range of research degrees available: PhD, MPhil, MA (Research) and Darts and two postgraduate coursework degrees, the Master of English Studies (MES) and the Master of Creative Writing (MCW, from 2015).
The Department also co-coordinates the Film Studies program
