Postgraduate coursework
Please note: the Master of European Studies and the associated Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate are not offered in 2012
Postgraduate coursework degrees consist of units of study rather than research, although they may involve completion of a dissertation. They usually require attendance at lectures and tutorials.
A diverse range of optional units is offered in French, German, Italian, and Modern Greek. Students may also take Middle Eastern (Arabic & Islamic Studies, Hebrew Biblical & Jewish Studies) units, and (with the approval of the Director and the department offering the unit) units with a European focus drawn from other disciplines such as Ancient World Studies, Art History and Theory, English, Film Studies, Philosophy, Government and International Relations.
Entry requirements
A recognised Bachelor’s degree with a major in the study of a European language and/or culture, or in a related subject area. There is at present no admission quota. Entry is possible mid-year as well as at the start of the year.

European Studies offers three degrees by coursework:
Master of European Studies (not offered in 2012)
The Master of European Studies can be completed in one year full-time or 2-4 years part time and consists of eight units of study (48 credit points) including at least one core unit and can include an optional dissertation (10-12,000 words) for 12 credit points.
Graduate Diploma in European Studies (not offered in 2012)
The Graduate Diploma in European Studies can be completed in one year full-time or up to 3 years part-time and consists of six units of study (36 credit points) including at least one core unit.
Graduate Certificate in European Studies (not offered in 2012)
The Graduate Certificate in European Studies can be completed in one semester (6 months) full-time or 1-2 years part-time and consists of four units of study (24 credit points) including at least one core unit.
Study pathways
There are currently two core units of study:
- EUST6900 European Identity and Cultures
- EUST6901 European Cinema and National Identity
The coursework degrees are very flexible in that students may choose a pathway allowing them to specialise in one language/culture (e.g. Italian) or an inter-disciplinary pathway (e.g. European literature).
Students may also include up to two units of language in any appropriate area, using the following unit codes:

Exchange
It is possible for students engaged in postgraduate degrees to spend some time on exchange with one of our many partner institutions in European countries (e.g. Paris, Geneva, Freiburg, Vienna, Florence, Turin). For further information contact the Director in the first instance.
