Postgraduate Coursework in Gender and Cultural Studies

The Gender and Cultural Studies Department at the University of Sydney is the leading centre for research into gender and culture in Australia, renowned internationally for interdisciplinary research and teaching in a wide range of cultural studies and gender studies.

With some of Australia's foremost researchers in these areas on staff, we will provide our students with critically engaging ideas and the tools to analyse a wide range of issues. Our academics draw on a number of theoretical and empirical research paradigms, spanning social science and humanities research methods.

The department offers the only specific Master of Cultural Studies program in Australia. The program allows you to engage with the changing meanings of cultural in our everyday world. You will learn how to analyse cultural forms while debating their significance in relation to socio-historical contexts. The program does not presume pre-existing knowledge of cultural studies. However for those with a background in the field it presents an opportunity to deepen and extend this knowledge.

In joining the department, you will belong to a dynamic postgraduate community. Our students are invited to attend both the department's research seminar series and the postgraduate work-in-progress series.

Postgraduate coursework students are guided in their program by the convenor of Postgraduate Coursework Convenor. You should discuss which degree is most appropriate for you. This is your opportunity to discuss what kinds of units might be appropriate, including whether or not to include dissertation units (a 500 word proposal will be needed before you enrol in Dissertation Part 1) or participate in the Department's internship program.
