Biographical details

Dr Dean Murphy is Senior Research Associate in the Department of Gender and Cultural Studies. He works on an SRC Discovery Project, ‘Chemical Practices: Enhancement and Experimentation’, which is investigating the chemical practices of sexual and gender minorities in Australia and how health agencies have sought to address them. He also has appointments at UNSW Sydney, in The Kirby Institute and the Centre for Social Research in Health. His other work is concerned with sexual cultures enacted through antiretroviral-based HIV prevention.

His recent book, ‘Gay men pursuing parenthood via surrogacy: Reconfiguring kinship’ (UNSW Press, 2015) investigated sexuality, masculinity and kinship among gay men from Australia and the United States of America who have become parents through commercial surrogacy arrangements.
