Cultural Studies Program

The Cultural Studies program enables students to undertake a broad study of culture and the ways in which it can be understood. The major allows you to take core units in Media and Communications, English, Art History and Theory, Sociology and Anthropology as well as dedicated Cultural Studies units on topics such as: media and cultural practice; youth cultures; everyday cultures; consumer identities and practices; popular genre studies; and critical cultural theory

In 2011 the Department of Gender and Cultural Studies is introducing first year units: GCST1601 Introduction to Cultural Studies and GCST2602 Introduction to Gender Studies. Cultural Studies will now be available at first, second and third year and at fourth year Honours level.

The prerequisite for our second year units is 18 junior credit points which can be taken from any discipline/s. Although the first year units are not prerequisites for second year Cultural Studies units, students wishing to do third year units will need to have successfully completed at least one of our first year units.

All Cultural Studies units are available as individual or sets within other majors. Some are cross-listed for other majors. See the Faculty table of cross-listed units for more information.
