Description
This unit offers an introduction to German culture and society in the first half of the 19th century. It looks at how the foundations of the German nation state were laid in the wake of upheavals that began with the French Revolution, and at the traces of these developments in literature and society. Through analysing contemporary literary texts and examining cultural, social and political conditions, it builds an understanding of how German society moved towards a unified nation state and towards industrialisation.
