A response to a number of recent publications on the First Crusade from a naval perspective. The naval history of the Crusades has never been written and this will be the first attempt to really examine the question by someone who understands not only medieval texts but also ships and men and how they operated in the Middle Ages. This paper will then be followed by a full-scale book on the naval history of the Crusades from 1095 to 1291
