Professor Pesman has held many key posts within the University of Sydney, including Head of the Department of History, Acting Principal of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Director of the Frederick May Foundation for Italian Studies and both Deputy Chair and Chair of the Academic Board. In March 1999 she was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor, College of Humanities and Social Sciences. After almost five years in this position, Professor Pesman took up the Challis Chair in History and retired from the University in mid- 2005. She is currently President of the Australian Historical Association.
Professor Pesman was the first female Chair of the Academic Board. During her term of office as Chair, the Academic Board commenced development of the Summer School, collated the Delegations of Authority (Academic Functions), developed the Undergraduate Coursework Rule, approved the Code of Conduct for Responsible Research Practice and developed new Principles of Assessment.
