History Department Response to Student Feedback
HSTY1025 - Early Medieval Europe (2004)
Unit Coordinators: Dr Lynette Olson and Dr Julie Ann Smith
Evaluations of HSTY1025 ‘Early Medieval Europe’ were on the whole positive, although there was a little more criticism than in recent years; for example, in last year’s evaluations no one disagreed with the statement, ‘Overall I was satisfied with the quality of this unit of study’ but this year a few did. The feature of the course most praised was the weekly tutorial exercises, but there were calls for the standard expected in these to be better explained. The challenge of presenting a broader period of History than many people are used to studying coherently is ongoing but well worth meeting, for this sort of broad study is a vital part of the historical experience. Also, more scope for group work will be a goal when the teachers plan together a new Medieval History first-year unit of study. The evaluation question in which the present unit ranked highest was about responsiveness to student feedback.
