Response to Student Feedback
HSTY2604 - Popular Culture in Australia 1850-1945 (2010)

Unit Coordinator: Professor Richard Waterhouse

Most of the responses were highly positive. 94% of students were satisfied with the quality of the unit; 91% accepted that the learning outcomes and expected standards were clear; 97% indicated that the teaching in the unit helped them to learn effectively. A high proportion (in excess of 80% in each case) also indicated that the unit was relevant to their degree, that it helped them to learn generic skiills, that it encouraged their thinking , that the staff were responsive to student feedback, and that the assessment allowed them to demonstrate what they had understood. The responses to group work/discussions were less positive as were the satisfaction levels with staff feedback and the quality of the reading materials. There is clearly a need to revise the way tutorials are conducted in this unit and to set more challenging reading for tutorials as well.

The students also indicated their approval of the excursion to the Macleay Museum and it is clear that a unit dealing with the subject matter of popular culture might benefit by more outings of this kind.

I enjoyed teaching this unit, I am pleased with the student response and I regret that I wil not have the opportunity to teach this unit again
