History Department Response to Student Feedback
HSTY2658 - French Politics and Culture (2008)
Unit Coordinator: Professor Robert Aldrich
This unit examined French history since 1789 with six modules: the French Revolution and its legacy; French society in the early Third Republic; French politics and culture in the fin-de-siècle and Belle Epoque; France abroad: international and colonial questions; France at war: 1941-1962; and contemporary France: the heritage of the past. The assessment comprised a 2500 essay (45%), a two-hour in-class examination (35%) and participation in tutorials (20%). Professor Aldrich gave all the lectures, and a tutor took all the tutorials and did the marking.
The overall satisfaction with the unit according to the USE surveys was 4.15 of 5.00. There was particular satisfaction that the learning outcomes and standards were clear, that the unit was relevant to the degree, that the staff were responsive, and that the unit encouraged and stimulated thought.
The unit will not be offered in 2009; it is tentatively scheduled to be offered again in Semester 1 of 2010.
