Ph.D. position: NCCR project “Democracy Barometer”

The NCCR Democracy (www.nccr-democracy.uzh.ch) is an interdisciplinary research program on the challenges to democracy in the 21st century funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the University of Zurich (UZH). In the framework of the NCCR project “Democracy Barometer” we are seeking a Ph.D. student. The appointment will begin on October 1st, 2013 (earlier start possible).
Project Description
The Democracy Barometer (www.democracybarometer.org) is a new instrument developed tomeasure the quality of democracy. The project (2013-2017) will study the processes of democratisation (from autocracy to democracy) and democracy diffusion in partial regimes. The project will also analyse citizens' perceptions of democracy in times of crises, based on comparative surveys of 25 established democracies. The project leaders are Daniel Bochsler (UZH) and Wolfgang Merkel (WZB).
Position / Profile
Candidates should be interested in a comparative analysis of democratisation and/or citizens' perceptions of the quality of democracy and have a very good knowledge of quantitative methods. They must have completed an MA degree in social sciences (including political science, communication science, etc.). Candidates need to be fluent in English. The knowledge of other relevant languages is an asset. The selected PhD student will participate in the NCCR Democracy doctoral program.
Terms of employment
The work location is the Centre for Democracy Studies Aarau (in Aarau) and is integrated in the Department for Political Science of the University of Zurich. The salary is determined according to the SNSF pay scale (42.000-48.000 CHF/year, gross). The position is limited to 4 years.
