Welcome to the Department of Italian Studies

The University of Sydney offers a full range of Italian programs from absolute beginners to PhD. Italian has been taught here since 1929, and the Department of Italian is one of the largest and best resourced in Australia. While we are at the forefront of innovation with online resources, we remain committed to small-group teaching and individual care for all students.

Each language unit of study offered by the Department helps you develop your skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Italian. Our cultural units will develop your analytical and critical skills, enabling you to pursue interests in all aspects of Italian language, literature and culture. At the University of Sydney, we specialise in:

  • Sociolinguistics and language teaching methodologies
  • Translation studies
  • Medieval and Renaissance studies
  • Intellectual history
  • Critical, literary, and visual theory
  • Modern Italian literature and culture
  • Migrant and travel studies
  • Italian theatre

Studying with us will give you access to the most extensive resources in Australasia. The University has comprehensive holdings and the highest level electronic subscriptions in Italian language and literature as well as history, fine arts and the social sciences.

You can also study Italian overseas as part of your degree; the University of Sydney has exchange programs with a number of Italian universities. A range of scholarships are currently available in the Faculties of Arts and Education and from the International Office to enable you to spend one semester studying in Italy in your third year.

Italian Studies receives generous support from the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, through the Italian Institute of Culture, and has been supported in the past by the Cassamarca Foundation.
