Department of Japanese Studies

Whether you want to study ancient Kyoto’s urban history or modern anime, the Department of Japanese Studies offers deep engagement in one of the world’s most vibrant cultures. We teach and research in Japanese history (modern and pre-modern), language, society and literature. We specialise in areas including film, cultural studies, media, and sociolinguistics.

Japanese Studies offers ten levels of Japanese language and a rich menu of units in history, literature, media and cultural studies, linguistics, and sociology. You study both on campus and overseas at leading Japanese universities from Hokkaido to Okinawa.
