Political Communication, Media Activism and Social Movements

Our research in this field addresses key public interest concerns about digital media privacy, media power, surveillance, inequality, and their social impacts. We are researching the legacy of Wikileaks in the post-Snowden era, the politics and influence of News Corp and the dynamics of media reform. Our interest in citizenship and democracy is also reflected in research about non-state actor engagement in local, national and international food policy and social activism around food security, environmental health and resource control.

Our collaborative research includes mapping of media reform movements internationally, in the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences Digital Humanities pilot. Dr Alana Mann co-convenes the Sydney Environment Institute’s Food, People and the Planet research group and MECO staffers are part of the Sydney Democracy Network.
