Geraldine Barnes is Director of the Centre for 2011. She joined the University of Sydney as a Lecturer in 1979 and was appointed McCaughey Professor of English Language and Early English Literature in 2008.

Her research interests are medieval literature (Old Norse and Middle English), medievalism, and early modern travel narrative. Her publications include several articles on the translation, reception, and development of chivalric romance in medieval Iceland, monographs on Middle English Romance (Counsel and Strategy in Middle English Romance 1993) and on the Old Norse V'nland Sagas and their post-medieval reception (Viking America: the first millenium 2001), an edited (with Gabrielle Singleton) volume of essays, Travel and Travellers from Bede to Dampier (2005), and articles and chapters on the travel writings of William Dampier. Her current research project, ‘The Bookish Riddarasögur’, is on the learned element in 14th- and 15th-century Icelandic romance.
