Dr Juanita Feros Ruys is a Senior Research Fellow and Associate Director of the Medieval and Early Modern Centre. She is also Director of the Sydney Node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions and Honours and Postgraduate Co-ordinator of the Medieval and Early Modern Centre.
Juanita is currently undertaking three research projects for the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions. These include a study on the attribution of emotions to demons in the High Middle Ages; a study of the emotions surrounding suicide in the Middle Ages, which she is pursuing in collaboration with Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Dr Rebecca McNamara; and a study on academic emotions in the premodern world, on which she is collaborating with Professor Yasmin Haskell (University of Western Australia).
Her other research interests include the writings of Abelard and Heloise; the writings of Latinate medieval women and their post-medieval reception; the literature of experience in the Middle Ages; didactic literature of the premodern period; and twelfth-century autobiography and texts of the self.
Juanita has just completed a book on the late life poetry of Peter Abelard (The Repentant Abelard, forthcoming Palgrave) which includes editions, translations, and commentary on Abelard’s Carmen ad Astralabium and Planctus; and she is currently completing a book on twelfth-century autobiography (Brepols).
She is currently preparing a book manuscript on the history of demonic emotions (The Secret Life of Demons) and with Professor Yasmin Haskell (UWA) is undertaking a research and book project on academic emotions.
With Dr Clare Monagle, Monash University, she is co-editing Volume 2: A Cultural History of the Emotions in the Medieval Age (350-1300) of the six-volume A Cultural History of the Emotions (Bloomsbury, forthcoming 2015).
