PE Seminar Series | Sports and The Global South: Work, Play and Resistance In Sri Lanka

4 October, 2018
4:00pm - 5:30pm

Speaker: Janaka Biyanwila

Abstract:

This talk is about reimagining the pleasures of sports from a Global South perspective. It will explore how the celebration of ‘sportive nationalism,’ promoting sports markets in the Global South, in places like Sri Lanka, reinforces patriarchal ethno-nationalist authoritarian sports cultures. By explaining how the realm of social reproduction involving households and communities is integral to the realm of sports production, the presentation will discuss the possibilities of transforming "sports markets" into a notion of ‘sports commons'.
