Annual Australian Centre for Asian Art and Archaeology ST Lee lecture
16 July, 2013
On Wednesday 31 July the Australian Centre for Asian Art and Archaeology, with which Power is strongly linked, will be hosting the annual ST Lee lecture by Professor Nora Taylor of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
The lecture will be given by Professor Nora Taylor of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is titled The Artist, the Archive and the Historical Artifact: Contemporary Vietnamese Artists Contemplate the Past. In her talk, Professor Taylor will discuss the contrasting ways in which two contemporary Vietnamese artists, Danh Vo and Dinh Q. Le have used historical documents dated to the American war period in their art installations as artifacts. The talk will explore whether these artists attempt to challenge official historical narratives, or through the objects they use, provide a kind of archive of the War period as a way to provoke discussion about personal versus collective memories. It will also address the recent project initiated by Asia Art Archive to collect documents pertaining to independent art spaces in Vietnam to highlight the role of the archive in historicising Vietnamese art. All these projects touch on the greater problem of the dearth of art historical documents and the loss of material artifacts that would enable multifaceted research in Vietnamese modern and contemporary art history.
Professor Nora Taylor is Alsdorf Professor of South and Southeast Asian Art History at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is author of Painters in Hanoi: An Ethnography of Vietnamese Art (Hawaii, 2004 and Singapore 2009) and co-editor of Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Art: An Anthology (Cornell SEAP, 2012) as well as numerous articles on modern and contemporary Vietnamese and Southeast Asian art.
The lecture will be held from 6–8pm Wednesday 31 July at the Quadrangle Refectory, The Quadrangle (A14) University of Sydney, Camperdown. Registration is not required.
