Merrilyn is a lecturer and tutor in the Department of Studies in Religion at the University of Sydney. She submitted her PhD in January 2012. Her PhD research was assisted by the Australian Postgraduate Award after she received first class honours in the Bachelor of Ancient History Honours degree at Macquarie University, Australia.
Her research interests include early Christianities and Judaisms, Hebrew language, women in Jewish and Christian texts, and the involvement of women in 21st century Christian communities. Her doctoral thesis examines the Scripture texts that are attributed to John the Baptist by New Testament authors.
In 2011 she attended Oxford University for a term to test her PhD research and in 2012 will contribute three papers on her most recent research to the Society of Biblical Literature conference in Amsterdam. She is co-lecturer and tutor for RLST 2611 ‘Monotheism: Judaism and Islam’ in first semester 2012, and plans to apply for a postdoctoral fellowship later this year to continue her research and teaching interests.
