Ancient columns and ruins against a clear blue sky

Ancient North Africa Research Network

A global hub for a better understanding of the region’s history
We offer an opportunity for academics and students interested in the region and its role in the ancient Mediterranean world to connect, conduct research and share knowledge.

About us

The ancient Mediterranean world was made up of a rich cultural and ethnic mosaic. As part of the Discipline of Classics and Ancient History, the Ancient North Africa Research Network aims to promote a better understanding of ancient North Africa and the contribution its people made to the political, economic, cultural and ideological development and environmental change of the Mediterranean region.

Our aims

The network has three main aims:

  • opportunities for interchange and dialogue between researchers and the broader interested community on the history and culture of the southern shores of the Mediterranean
  • a focal point for enquiry, research and understanding of ancient North Africa and its associated Mediterranean context
  • an opportunity for researchers to access extensive research materials on North African history and archaeology and its associated Mediterranean context.

Our work

Our activities are diverse and inclusive.

  • Supporting scholars with a well-resourced reference library
  • Arranging visits from distinguished scholars from Australia and abroad
  • Arranging conferences, seminars, workshops, lectures and other similar activities
  • Supporting high-quality research in the field.

We have a world-class reference library on ancient North Africa, the Phoenicians, South-West Asia and the general Mediterranean world.

We encourage and welcome involvement by individuals, companies, institutions and bodies with both academic and general interests in ancient North Africa.
