Our research

Applying our expertise to answer the big questions

From archaeological digs to artificial intelligence and legal ethics to language learning, we bring our love of knowledge and culture of excellence to the world's greatest challenges.

Our faculty has the most diverse range of specialists in humanities and social sciences in Australia. In the coming three years we will bring our expertise to bear on five specific challenges facing our planet:

Art, Communication and English

We have nationally and internationally recognised research strengths in literary studies, art theory and history, performing arts, creative writing, communication and media studies, religious studies and linguistics.

School of Economics research

We research a broad set of policy relevant and pressing issues, from climate change, poverty and economic development, health insurance and education, international trade, to inequality and recessions.

Education and social work research

We have a consistent track record of success in education and social work related research, including securing competitive grants from the Australian Research Council.

We are home to leading scholars in archaeology, classics and ancient history, gender and cultural studies, history, linguistics, philosophy, and studies in religion.

Languages and cultures research

We study languages, literature and cultures, along with studies of ancient and modern societies in Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East, as well as the multilingual reality of Australia.

Social and political sciences research

We have one of the strongest concentrations of social and political sciences researchers in the Australasian region. We offer collaborative research within the school, across the University and our international networks.
