Two alumni, Nick King and Sophie Wiesner, of the inaugural year of the BA Media & Communications at the University of Sydney have just announced that their short film, MARLA, will have its premiere screening in the Orizzonti competition at the Venice International Film Festival in 2012. The festival will take place from 29 August to 8 September 2012.
Nick King directed the film and won the University Medal upon completion of his Honours year in 2006. Sophie Wiesner produced the film and is also an alumna of MECO. The original idea for the film stemmed from a SUDS production staged by Nick and Sophie during their time University of Sydney.
MARLA was entirely self-funded and is Nick King's second film as writer and director; his first film, Soundtrack, premiered at the Brisbane International Film Festival in 2005.
"Nick King has crafted an incredibly powerful film. It still echoes in me as I write this. It feels real, and at the same time, like a fairy-tale. It offers all of the romance and hope, all of the private and forbidden intimacies, and ultimately, the joyous sorrow all great stories contain. This is a masterfully made piece. All involved shine bright in this loud-as-hell whisper of a film. See it." - Jennifer Lynch (Surveillance, A Fall From Grace)
