Biographical details
Michael Lewis is an historian of modern Japan with research interests in the intersections of social, cultural, and scientific history. He has written major studies on mass movements in nineteenth and twentieth century Japan and, more recently, focused on the crowd’s popular “intellectuals,” satirists and singers, and their inconsistent roles in movements for greater economic and political equality in Japan, and stands taken for and against the prewar Japanese empire. He is also researching the history of psychiatry in modern Japan by exploring the lives of medical professionals who introduced Western therapies from the late nineteenth century through the 1940s. Before joining the Department of Japanese Studies at the University of Sydney, he directed the Asian Studies Centre at Michigan State University, where he led in creating the first All-Asia U.S. Department of Education National Resource Centre.
Professor Lewis has served as visiting scholar at Harvard, Stanford, University of Tokyo, and other universities. Harvard University Press, University of Hawaii Press, and Cornell University Press are a few of the presses for which he has worked as manuscript reviewer. He also edited the on-line journal Studies on Asia as well as other publications.
Teaching and supervision
Teaching
- Professor Lewis has taught a wide range of courses in Japanese and East Asian History at both the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as general courses on historiography. He has conducted graduate seminars on the politics of protest in Japan, imperialism, and Sino-Japanese modern international relations
Supervision
- Professor Lewis has served as advisor to Asian Studies program and history undergraduate students in the U.S. university system. He has also directed the Japan Centre for Michigan Universities in Hikone and the Konan University Consortium Program in Kobe.
- At the graduate level, he has advised M.A. and doctoral students in History and has served on graduate student thesis and dissertation committees in Linguistics, Education, and other fields.
Current projects
Professor Lewis is presently researching a study of nineteenth and twentieth century Japanese pioneers in introducing humane therapies for treating mental illness. The study examines the movement to decriminalize illness and introduce new therapies, including psychoanalysis. He has recently completed research on this project at Tokyo’s Waseda and Keio Universities.
