Marco Santello gained his BA at the University of Padua and his MA magna cum laude at the Catholic University of Milan. Subsequent to his graduation he lived in Norway, where he was involved in various activities with the Italian Culture Institute of Oslo, and then moved to Canada to work within the Italian community of Toronto.
His academic interests include sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, cognitive linguistics, bilingualism, language contact phenomena, media studies and advertising. He has done research on bilingualism and language attitudes, investigating how Italian English bilinguals negotiate evaluative reactions to their two languages. He is also interested in folk linguistics and perceptual dialectology.
His doctoral thesis explores the role of language dominance and language attitudes in bilinguals' response to persuasive messages in different languages. In particular, he focuses on response to advertising in Italian and English among Italian English bilinguals.
