Human Rights have become the language of our time, and the core business of an increasing number of government, inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations both in Australia and internationally. We recognise the need to provide organisations with graduates who have a deep understanding of human rights theory and practice, and the ability to see how human rights language and tools can be used effectively in real life situations.

Our course offers a firm foundation in human rights policy and, through a series of core units, provides a practical understanding of how human rights operate in different political, economic, social and environmental contexts. Emphasising the practice of human rights, the course equips students to use human rights language and tools skilfully and effectively, in order to achieve specific changes in the real world. This practical dimension includes the opportunity to undertake an internship within an Australian or international human rights organisation. The course will also provide you with the ability to undertake independent scholarly research on current human rights issues, and the skills to put your academic understanding to use in real situations. While our degree has a global focus, it will also capitalise on Australia’s geo-political location, thus offering a unique perspective on the Asia-Pacific region.

Increasingly, during the course of their business activities, major Australian and multi-national corporations have realised the need to take human rights considerations into account. As such, graduates can expect to find employment within dedicated human rights governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations, as well as within government departments and agencies where human rights specialisation is required.
