Welcome
Welcome to the The School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry (SOPHI)! We are home to a number of the major departments within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and the School is made up of the Departments of Archaeology, Classics and Ancient History, Gender and Cultural Studies, History and Philosophy, as well as the and the Centre for Time and the Sydney Centre for the Foundations of Science.
The School brings together an exciting group of teachers, researchers and students across the breadth of the humanities, engaging in cutting-edge research and energetic and innovative teaching.
As such, you are a valuable member of our Academic team, and we hope you enjoy your time with us at SOPHI.
Tutors' Development Program
If you are working as a tutor in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, you are warmly invited to participate in the Tutors’ Development Program this semester. The program, which runs over four sessions, provides tutors with an opportunity to develop and reflect on their teaching practice, as well as engage with peers. At the end of the program, your participation will be rewarded with a certificate that you can add to your CV. The sessions cover the following topics:
- What do I do in the first tutorial?
- How do I teach so my students will actually learn?
- How am I going?: Strategies for evaluating and reflecting on my teaching.
- How do I promote academic honesty and deal with plagiarism?
Sessions will be held in the Main Common Room at the Woolley Common Room, 2:00pm - 5:00pm on Friday 12 March, Friday 26 March, Friday 16 April and Friday 30 May 2010 (Weeks 2, 4, 6 and 9).
This year we are also introducing an new eLearning module. This optional module is designed to help you develop skills and knowledge about how best to complement, or even replace, some aspects of face-to-face teaching with online activities. Sessions in this module will address the following themes:
- What is online learning and what does it offer my students?
- What is my role in eLearning

If you participated in the program in a previous semester but were unable to attend one or more of the sessions, you are very welcome to come along this semester to make up for the session(s) you missed – please just make sure to register again.
