Biographical details

Born and raised in the Soviet and later independent Kyrgyzstan, I study the political history of the Tsarist and early Soviet Central Asia. I am particularly interested in tracing practices and ideas that informed the Soviet governance of the region. My other research interests include the Central Asian uprising of 1916, its Soviet historiography and communal commemoration, and the politics of nation-building and nationalism in post-Soviet Central Asia. I am currently researching the Soviet campaign of delimitation of ethnic minorities in interwar Kyrgyzstan.
